Typhoon Egay maintains strength as it lashes Cagayan

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Egay (international name: Doksuri) keeps its strength as it advances northwestward over the coastal waters of Calayan, Cagayan.

At 2 p.m., Egay was located over Dalupiri Island, where it earlier made landfall, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Egay is moving 10 kilometers per hour (kph) while carrying maximum sustained winds of 175 kph near the center with gustiness of up to 240 kph.

Pagasa warned “life-threatening conditions are expected to continue over Babuyan Islands, the northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan, and the northern portions of Apayao and Ilocos Norte in the next six hours.”

Typhoon Egay will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” bringing occasional rains over the western portions of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas in the next three days.

The typhoon is expected to turn generally northwestward or north-northwestward through the rest of the week.

It is forecast to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday morning.
