SWS: Fewer Filipinos say quality of life improved in past year

MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-nine percent of Filipinos said that their quality of life improved in the past 12 months, which is lower than the 34 percent recorded in December 2022, according to a survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) on Monday.

On the other hand, 25 percent said their quality of life worsened, while the majority, or 46 percent, said it remained unchanged.

Based on the survey by SWS on March 26 to 29, this resulted in a “net gainers score” of +5, which the SWS classified as high.

To note, SWS classifies a score of 20+ as “excellent,” +10 to +19 as “very high,” +1 to +9 as “high, – 9 to 0 as “fair,” –19 to –10 as “mediocre,” –29 to –20 as “low,” –39 to –30 as “very low,” –49 to –40 as “extremely low” and –50 and below as “catastrophic.”

According to SWS, March’s net gainers’ score was 3 points below the high +8 in December 2022 and is still 13 points below the pre-pandemic level of very high +18 in December 2019.

The lower net score was reflected in every region, with Metro Manila’s gain score falling from +18 (very high) to only +2 (high).

Likewise, Mindanao, its +10 (very high) net gain score in December 2022 fell to +6 (high), while Visayas’ further dropped by 10 points from -4 (fair) to -14 (mediocre).

Meanwhile, the score slightly increased in Balance Luzon from +10 to +12, staying at “very high.”

SWS said the survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults — 300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao — with sampling error margins of ±2.8% for national percentages, and ±5.7% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
