NDRRMC: Nearly 3M affected by Typhoon Egay, southwest monsoon as of August 3

The NDRRMC says that as of August 3, 2023, nearly 3 million people have been affected by Typhoon Egay and the southwest monsoon

MANILA, Philippines — The wrath of Typhoon Egay (international name: Doksuri) and the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, affected nearly 3 million people as of August 3, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

In its latest situational report released on Thursday morning, the NDRRMC said that 781,728 families or 2,930,200 people in Luzon and Visayas have been affected by the two weather disturbances.

The agency’s report also stated that of the tentative total, 288,039 have been displaced in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 2 (Cagayan Valley), 3 (Central Luzon), and 6 (Western Visayas); Mimaropa (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan); and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon).

The number of displaced people staying in evacuation centers is 57,532 while 230,507 are outside evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC’s August 3 report further indicated that the death counts it received due to the typhoon and southwest monsoon stood at 27 – only two of them were validated – while the number of injured and missing reached 140 and 13, respectively.

At least 53,358 houses were also partly destroyed and 2,228 were severely damaged by the two weather disturbances, according to the NDRRMC, which distributed P239,221,853 worth of assistance to affected families.
