Makati City grenade blast kills 1, injures 3 others – police
MANILA, Philippines — One person was killed while three others were hurt in a suspected grenade explosion in Makati City, the police said Monday.
The Southern Police District (SPD) in a report said the grenade blast, which killed John Al Javier and injured his friends Junnie Boy Dizon, Jay Ar Ardeño, and Ronnie Rivas Mamayabay, happened late Saturday night in Barangay Pembo.
Initial inquiry of the SPD revealed that witness Miguel Cruz was drinking with Javier earlier in the day when he “saw the latter get the alleged grenade inside the speaker near their place and hide in his body.”
Their other friends then joined Cruz and Javier in their drinking spree, the police also said.
“A minute later, while Mr. Miguel [was] broiling fish for their food while drinking [when] victim Javier asked the former if he would join the latter in committing suicide or killing someone while holding an unknown type of grenade, prompting Mr. Miguel to go home,” SPD said.
While Cruz was en route to his home, Javier reportedly followed him to convince him to join the latter’s plan, but he again refused.
So Javier returned to his home, according to police, and then Cruz “heard a loud thud.”
Makati’s explosive ordnance disposal team and forensic unit later arrived at the scene and recovered pieces of metal fragments – believed to be parts of a grenade.
“They noticed several pockmarks and splattered human body tissues at the site of the incident,” it further noted.
The SPD said Javier was declared dead on arrival at Ospital ng Makati. On the other hand, Dizon was in critical condition while Ardeño and Mamayabay were declared under stable condition, the police added.
