Egay, monsoon caused 13 deaths,12 injuries, impacting over 500,000 people – NDRRMC

MANILA, Philippines — Thirteen people have reportedly died, while 12 were injured due to the combined effects of typhoon Egay (international name: Doksuri) and the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat.’

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released an 8 a.m. update on Friday, explaining 13 people were reportedly killed, but only six were confirmed in its previous bulletin.

The cases of seven other reported fatalities are being validated.

The weather disturbances also affected 502,782 people or 140,923 families in 1,612 barangays in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 2 (Cagayan Valley), 3 (Central Luzon), Mimaropa (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan), and Region 6 (Western Visayas).

NDRRMC also reported the typhoon had displaced 42,831 persons.

Twenty-nine thousand two hundred twenty-three were transferred to 479 evacuation centers, while 13,608 took shelter elsewhere.

Aside from the affected people, the agency said the effects of Egay and habagat partially destroyed 1,848 homes and severely damaged 154 houses.

Moreover, the typhoon left 57 roads, six bridges, two schools, two government facilities, and a private establishment with infrastructure damage amounting to over P2 million.

NDRRMC said of the 163 cities or municipalities that experienced power outages, 40 percent or 65 areas already have electricity.

The council also said the government had distributed P18,250,546.07 worth of assistance to affected and displaced residents.

Over P16 million came from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and almost P3 million were provided by various local government units.
