Drag queen charged for viral ‘Ama Namin’ video

MANILA, Philippines — Leaders of Christian churches under the Philippines for Jesus Movement (PJM) filed a case on Monday against drag artist Pura Luka Vega for her viral drag performance of “Ama Namin” (Our Father), which sparked debates on the boundary of “art” and “blasphemy.”
PJM President Bishop Leo Alconga, Pastor Romie Suela, and Pastor Mars Rodriguez individually charged Pura Luka with alleged violation of Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code and in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
On July 10, Pura Luka Vega posted a video on Twitter (now X) where she is seen wearing a Black Nazarene-drag costume while dancing to a remix version of Ama Namin inside a bar.
According to the PJM, the drag performance was “not only terribly blasphemous” but also caused a devalued and negative image” of the Christian God, which they hold in veneration.
