LUCENA CITY—Four persons died early Wednesday, August 17, after the sport utility vehicle (SUV) they were traveling in hit a cargo truck along the Maharlika Highway in Tayabas City in Quezon province.

A spot report from Quezon police said a Toyota Innova crashed at about 3 a.m. into the rear portion of a cargo truck running ahead in a section of the highway in Barangay Calumpang.

The SUV passengers – two males and two females – suffered grave injuries and were taken to Quezon Medical Center, but they all died on the way.

Master Sergeant Jomer Quinio, the case investigator, said the truck was running slowly while traversing an ascending section of the highway.

“The Innova is probably running fast as that part of the highway usually has fewer vehicles during that time,” Quinio said in a phone interview.

He said the bodies of the victims were at the QMC morgue.

The unidentified truck driver was under police custody while the incident is still under investigation.
