LUCENA CITY – A woman pedestrian and a motorcycle rider died in separate accidents in Quezon province on Saturday, July 29, police said.

Quezon police, in a report Sunday, July 30, said that motorcyclist Rommel Medrano, 36, and his back rider, Merriam Castillo, 31, were traversing the Maharlika Highway in Barangay (village) Madlandungan in Calauag town around 10 p.m. when the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle after he stepped on the brake due to the rough pavement.

The wayward motorcycle consequently slid and threw off the riders who landed on the pavement.

Both victims sustained injuries and were taken to the nearest hospital, but Medrano was declared dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, in Catanauan town, Mila De Gala, 54, died after a Toyota Hilux pick-up driven by Mark Kaven Rogel, 34, accidentally hit her while she was crossing a national road in Barangay Matandang Sabang Silangan around 6:35 a.m.

De Gala, who suffered grave head injuries, died on the spot.

Rogel was placed under police custody.
